Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in January 2014 during work at St Mary's Primary School, Buckfast, Devon. The site lies in an area of high archaeological potential immediately outside the South Gate to the inner precinct. Preliminary archaeological work included a desk-based assessment which showed that the area had been an Orchard until the late-19th century. A watching brief was undertaken by Stewart Brown Associates between August 2012 and January 2013 on land to the north-west. This identified the remains of a medieval farm complex, located in the outer court of the abbey, and a ditch which formed part of the monastic water supply. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the construction of a new hall, an amphitheatre area, and associated drainage works. The groundworks included an area excavation 26m x 20m and up to 2.05m deep, while the drainage works were on average 0.5m wide and 0.7m deep. The works revealed a simple deposit sequence extending across the entire site. |
