Abstract: |
The project synthesised the archaeological evidence for the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic occupation of south-west Britain (c. 500,000 to 40,000 BP), with a principal focus upon the archaeological and geological potential of the region's Middle Pleistocene fluvial environments. South-west Britain was defined as the region west of the headwaters of the River Frome and River Piddle (tributaries of the now-extinct Solent River system) and south-west of the River Avon. The key aims of the project were to: 1, Aid the current and future mitigation of aggregates extraction activity in the south-west region by local government mineral planners and archaeologists, through the provision of enhanced Historic Environment Records (HERs) and related, new GIS mapping resources. 2, Disseminate the results of the research project to the general public and the aggregates industry.3, Directly engage the general public with the Palaeolithic geoarchaeology of the south-west region through outreach activities. 4, Document and assess the potential of the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic archaeological record of the south west Britain region, with specific reference to the fluvial secondary context component of the archaeological record. 5, Produce a regional synthesis of the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic occupation and Pleistocene fluvial landscapes of the south west Britain region, appropriate for publication on completion of the project. The project fieldwork was principally targetted at the Exe, Otter, and Axe river systems, reflecting the results of the resource evaluation and the principal location of current/potential future aggregates extraction areas. |
