Abstract: |
The results of an evaluation by trial trench of land adjacent to Arden House, The Street, Fornham All Saints, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The site is situated in the immediate vicinity of the projected line of the Fornham Cursus (FAS 004), parts of which are a Scheduled Monument (SF 114). The cursus, formerly ditches and banks that are now visible as cropmarks, stretches for over a mile between Fornham and Hengrave. It would have been a significant Neolithic landscape feature and is interpreted as a processional way dating to 3500 - 3000BC. The evaluation trench was placed perpendicular to the expected orientation of the Fornham Cursus. No linear features were revealed and only a single anthropogenic feature was recorded in the form of a small post-hole of uncertain date. The general fill and character of this feature suggest that it may be prehistoric in date. A small number of residual prehistoric flints were collected, including a fresh flake from a natural feature and a weathered bladelet from the subsoil. |
