Abstract: |
Archaeological investigations took place at Thorne Grammar School to inform a planning decision for a proposed new school on the site. A desk-based assessment concluded that potential for prehistoric remains was low to moderate, potential for Roman or Saxon remains was low and potential for medieval remains was high. A geophysical survey recorded traces of agricultural usage, such as ridge and furrow ploughing, a former field system and pit-like anomolies. Field evaluation in the form of fifteen trenches exposed 17th and 18th century pits and linear fatures, a dew pond, medieval plough furrows, a post medieval fenceline, field drains, postholes and a possible hedge line. |
