Abstract: |
The White Tower shop is located in the western room of the White Tower basement, and in the first quarter of 2016 a renovation project was undertaken to improve the design and layout of this retail space. Included within the refurbishment was the replacement of six concrete areas situated within the recesses in the shop area. As a consequence and as part of the requirements of the project an archaeologist was present during the course of this phase of the works since the potential for archaeology in this area was high. It revealed significantly the presence of two north-south aligned Tudor walls thought to correspond to sleeper walls used to support posts that reinforced the increasing weight of the floors above. A number of potential floor levels related to the Tudor phase were also exposed along with the later floor levels associated with the vaults inserted during the 18th century. |
