Abstract: |
A small set-piece excavation was undertaken in order to fulfil a condition placed on planning approval for a development at Doddington Road, Earls Barton. Previous evaluation had found a small number of ditches and gullies, dated to the middle Iron Age, at the southern end of the development site and the ensuing excavation was focussed in this area. The excavation exposed more of the features recorded during the evaluation, but few others were present. The ditches and gullies extended beyond the excavation limits and are likely to have been part of a wider boundary system or enclosures. Most of the features contained few finds apart from a ditch aligned north to south. Much of the pottery, all dated to the late Iron Age, was retrieved from the fill of this ditch and a later recut, along with fire-cracked cobbles and burnt clay. Although there was no definitive evidence of contemporary structures, the material evidence suggests occupation was located very close by. |
