Abstract: |
A planning application was submitted to create a live/work unit by converting an existing warehouse in Buxton Place, Ulverston, Cumbria. Following a recommendation by Cumbria County Council Historic Environment Service, a programme of archaeological work was requested by South Lakeland District Council. This work involved a Level 3 recording of the building and a rapid desk-based assessment. Documentary sources demonstrate that the building was one of a number of warehouses in the vicinity, and that this area of town was a focus for light industrial activity in the 19th century. The warehouse was built between 1832 and 1852 and it appears to have largely retained its original form along with a number of early or original features, including the fireplaces and timber gravity hoist. The building recording revealed five main phases of building and alteration which relate to changing ownership and usage combined with the addition and removal of neighbouring buildings along with repairs and modernisation. |
