This site was one of few open areas fronting the east side of Great Whip Street within a large malthouse complex. ABM Malting Ltd gave permission for an opportunistic excavation in 1974.
Four pits, one posthole and a short length of foundation trench were attributed to the Middle Saxon period (MS: c.700-850).
The majority of the features recorded were Medieval with three pits, a ditch, presumably a roadside ditch for Great Whip Street, and a short length of foundation trench, belonging to the Early Medieval period (EMED: c.1000-1200) period. Two pits were identified as Late Medieval (LMED: c.1200-1450) and five pits, a rectangular flint and mortar lined cess pit, and a circular well with a timber-lined shaft, indicated residential occupation of the street front during the Late Medieval Transitional period (LMT: c.1450-1600).
Post Medieval features included a well, four pits and two post holes.
