Old Hutt, Halewood (SJ 450838)

A medieval moated site at Halewood excavated in 1960. The site lay within the area chosen for Ford's motor manufacturing plant. The remains of medieval and 17th century structures were still standing on the site at the time of excavation.

The principal medieval structure, dating to the 14th century, was a hall with stone walls and a timber roof. By the second quarter of the 17th century the upper end of the hall had been remodelled. It contained a gallery with various chambers off, and the great parlour. A new wing was added with a Jacobean fireplace and mullioned windows.

The finds:

Medieval pottery dated 14th - 15th centuries; late medieval pottery dated 16th century; post-medieval pottery of 17th and 18th centuries; clay tobacco pipes; glass vessels; stone mortar; stone roofing materials and ceramic roof tiles; decorated plaster. Pottery types include local medieval wares, Cistercian type ware, mottled ware, slipware, tin-glazed earthenware, black-glazed coarse and fineware.
