Excavations, to the North of Saltwood Tunnel, were undertaken by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust between September 1999 and June 2000, centred between the previously excavated settlement (ARC SLT 98), of Iron Age and Roman date to the west, and the early Anglo-Saxon cemetery overlying a prehistoric ring ditch (ARC SLT 98c), to the east.
The principal features identified were a large barrow ditch, a much smaller barrow ditch, two crouch burials and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery consisting of 54 inhumations. The investigation also identified a number of linear ditch/gully features, a larger curvilinear ditch, a scattering of cremation burials. Other features were investigated, although poor definition and paucity of finds recovered would suggest that these were either of geological origin or the product of other natural processes.
An Archaeological Evaluation (ARC SLT 97) was also undertaken at Saltwood Tunnel prior to the excavation phases, as part of CTRL phase 1.
