Prior to demolition and redevelopment of the site, the University of Southampton commissioned an archaeological building recording survey of Bassett House in August 2012. The digital archive from this survey consists of the descriptive and photographic record alongside full planar and elevational drawings.
The descriptive record of Bassett House, a mid-nineteenth villa remaining from an 1850 estate layout, is set in the context of the nineteenth century and later development of Bassett. It is well illustrated with plans and photographs. Some aspects of this study do not appear to have been considered or published before. A full bibliography is provided, as well as a glossary of technical terms.
The record also includes a comprehensive photographic record of the interior and exterior of the present house, including photographs of the presumed original roof structure within the present roof.
The Record was executed in order to discharge Conditions 7 and 8 of Demolition Prior Approval 12/00598/DPA dated 22 May 2012. It follows the writing of a Statement of Significance relating to this property (Underwood, M. (2012 - March, revised August). Bassett House, Southampton: Statement of Significance. Southampton: The University of Southampton). The Record is to Level 3 as described in 'Understanding Historic Buildings: A guide to good recording practice' (English Heritage, 2006).
