The Archaeology Unit of Southampton City Council carried out an evaluation excavation of 22 Midanbury Lane, Southampton, in March 2015. The aims of the evaluation were to determine the extent, condition, nature, character, quality, and date of any archaeological remains encountered.
The site had been a school for some years, prior to that a large detached house occupied the plot. The natural was clay and gravel deposits. It was observed 0.35m– 0.45m below the surface in the west part of the site and 0.1m– 0.25m below the surface in the east part of the site. The top of the natural may have been truncated by car parking and access roads in the east part of the site.
A thin layer of soil lay above the natural. This layer was thicker in the centre of the site, to the south of where the original house stood, in an area delineated by small stone walls; probably once a flower bed. The soil layer contained late 19th and 20th century finds such as brick, roof tile, flower pot and china. One potential archaeological feature was found, but its fill contained Welsh roof slate so a late 19th or 20th century date is likely.
The soil and the top of the natural was strongly gleyed due to waterlogging and lack of oxygen and the land may only ever have been used for pasture. No finds were recovered; the archive consists of the site records only.
