The aim of this paper is to provide some simple guidelines which may enable the field archaeologist to assess the environmental potential of a site, and to take soil samples with a definite end in view â an essential if time is not to be wasted. The first part will deal with different methods of sampling, both individual layers, and sections. Comment will then be made regarding the preservation in different soils, and the sample size needed for different classes of environmental material.
