A programme of building recording was carried out in advance of the proposed redevelopment for residential use of a group of redundant and largely derelict farm buildings at West Chevington Farm, south Northumberland.
The photographic recording was undertaken using colour digital photography. In addition, a measured plan and elevation drawings of the building supplied by the architect was examined with the intention to annotate to correct any errors and show historic phasing, which proved unnecessary. Similarly, efforts were made to research the history and development of the site through locally available historic maps and records.
The interesting, though not exceptional, complex of farm buildings, reflected a period of transition in the construction and operation of planned farms in the mid-19th century when horse-power was giving way to steam. A large part of the significance of these buildings lay in the almost complete survival of the complex as constructed by c.1860, but the highly dilapidated state of most of the buildings, at the time of the recording project, detracted from their importance. It was recommended, however, that as much of the historic fabric as possible, as well as the overall ground plan, was retained during their conversion to residential use.
