Reconsiders the evidence from the three forts in relation to current knowledge of the Dover establishment. Richborough's importance at the end of Roman rule reflects its status as port of exit; Reculver (which the Roman fleet helped to build?) was abandoned by the time of Richborough's recrudescence. Recent work by KARU at Lympne suggests occupation c 270-350; a polygonal plan is preferred. (For Lympne see also author's article on Romney Marsh in Kent Archaeol Rev, 68, 1982, 175-91.) | ||||||
