Abstract:
The rich harvest of material on early med houses in Dublin (about 200 excavated examples) includes information on many details which appear in later vernacular contexts, such as central hearths and hipped roofs. The five Dublin house types, figured and described, cannot confidently be regarded as the start of an unbroken tradition through to post-Norman houses, and indeed the relatively recent Irish vernacular houses probably owe much to Anglo-Norman influence and houses like Goltho and Barton Blount. Roofing and walling are examined in some detail in an attempt to bridge the half-millennium gap. The 11th century Dublin A-frame may or may not relate to the English cruck or the Ulster series. The value of folk life data to the archaeologist is clear.
