SU 126725 etc. The rarity of Acheulian artefacts (hand axes, ovates, flakes and cores) suggests this area was only intermittently occupied during the immensely long period of the Great Interglacial. On Hackpen Hill the palaeoliths are underived but have suffered severe abrasion and crushing during post-Acheulian solifluction. Implements from the lower plateau have escaped this damage, remain in situ and are merely weathered and coloured. The particular interest of the palaeoliths from Hackpen, Milk and Martinsell Hills, apart from demonstrating the date of the last considerable soil movements, lies in the altitude at which they are found, the highest in the Acheulian province of NE France-S England. | ||
