Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The nature of Wessex society as revealed by the "rich" burials is discussed and models for the rise of such a society are considered. Notable facts are: the variety in character of the burials, the lack of correlation between rich burial and large mound, and the Wessex craftsman's evident interest in accurate fitting of component parts. The "chiefdom" model is not entirely satisfactory; the "pastoralist" model remains attractive, perhaps in conjunction with the "conquest" model; but an ethological type of model incorporating a displaying, charismatic leader may prove more useful still. | ||||||
