Abstract:
Windermere Reflections is a three-year partnership project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and four core funding partners. One element of the project is Reflections on History, which set out to increase public understanding of the rich and unusual heritage within the unique landscape around Windermere in the Lake District in north-west England through a programme of archaeological investigation. Work began in 2010 with an assessment of the known archaeological sites and historic land use within the Windermere catchment area. On the basis of the results, four community archaeology projects were undertaken in 2012--14. These examined the woodland, water, stone and mineral-based heritage of the catchment. This booklet describes the methodologies used during the fieldwork, before outlining the archaeological and historical background to the area from the prehistoric period onwards. Separate chapters then deal with woodland as a resource, fulling mills, the slate industry, mining and iron working, outlining the history of each and key results from the fieldwork. LD
