Abstract:		 A rare decorated stone block was discovered at a quarry extension at Pierowall, Westray, in Orkney. Visiting archaeologists observed that the stone had come from a rubble mound which included structural elements. The site could not immediately be identified as either a chambered tomb or a burnt mound, contexts to which similar but much less ornate stones have previously been linked. The few poor-quality sherds of pottery recovered only served to emphasise the doubt as to whether the site was Neolithic or Middle/Late Bronze Age. Comparative material from sites elsewhere in Britain, including Ireland, is mentioned. LD
