Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A number of churches built in France between AD 1125 and 1150 show the emergence of a homogeneous Gothic style whose mark is the consistent use of pointed arches. In the Near East, the pointed arch was in consistent use at least two centuries earlier but, as Wren rightly saw in 1713, it was the early Crusades that provided the impetus and the technical skill required to import the style into Europe and develop it. A marked general improvement in setting-out and workmanship in Europe at this time may be attributed to the arrival from the Arab world of new mathematical and scientific knowledge (including Euclidean geometry, probably in Adelard's version of c 1120). As for actual sources of Gothic, the ribbed vault and pointed arch are seen in use together at the relevant time in only one region, that NE of Antioch where Seljuks confronted Frankish Crusaders; and at Bitlis in particular the Great Mosque of AD 1126 is closely comparable in style to its proto-Gothic equivalent at Fontenay. | ||||||||
