Abstract:
[SU 6204]. Occupation was continuous throughout the period. Roman cobbled streets and timber buildings, pits and wells show little sign of rigid planning. The streets continued to be used in 5th and 6th centuries when huts of post-built and sunken type were constructed. Some parts of the interior were now ploughed. In 8th-9th centuries timber buildings, storage pits and cesspits were concentrated in one area close to the S wall of the Roman fort. Nearby, a well, constantly used from the Roman period and subsequently relined with timber, was abandoned to rubbish. Some additional structures of the late Saxon "hall complex" were found, and there were medieval boundary ditches, a lime kiln and slaking pit. Cultivation continued in parts of the area. A large masonry store building was erected and demolished within 16th century. Various features of the prison camp of 18th-19th centuries were found. Excavation of the Landgate revealed structural details of Roman, Saxon and medieval date. Limited excavation in the priory exposed details of the claustral buildings. Au(abr)
