A workshop in Belgium in 2001 (`Terres Noires: Dark Earth in the Dark Ages', Universite Catholique de Louvain, 8-9 November 2001) prompted the authors to show how this concept, which developed in England, became altered when employed in mainland Europe. New research is presented on what is actually held to be a widespread phenomenon, and the authors warn that uncritical assumptions about such layers made on the ground can cause the loss of important information. | ||||
