Abstract:
SP 997802. Rescue excavation followed by salvage operations in Henslow Meadow, Aldwincle, gravel quarry revealed structures of several different periods, including a Neolithic mortuary enclosure of three phases. The first was a shallow ditch enclosing a rectangular area which had contained a timber structure (6 x 7 metres) over a pair of oval pits (?ridge-roofed mortuary house). Next, a much larger oval ditch was dug and unequivocal evidence left for another mortuary house supported by massive half-tree trunks and containing one flexed and one disarticulated burial without grave-goods. Phase III was a still larger ditch (?barrow) with Peterborough and Grooved Wares in its fill. Obvious partial parallels in Britain are Normanton Down, Waylands Smithy and Pitnacree. "Continental parallel-chasing" in specific terms is inappropriate since these sites probably represent a regional (British) development stemming from a generalised European inheritance of funerary custom.
