Abstract:
SO 927161. Brief summary of work on one of the hillforts under investigation in the current Cotswold research programme (see also 72/1648). Four main periods of occupation included a stone and timber box-rampart, subsequently burnt (from the rear) and reduced to slaked lime. A later, massive rebuilding in stone added bastions and a hornwork to the entrance, but a second firing was followed by abandonment and only casual later occupation. The pottery is all of earliest Iron Age date. Examination of an eroded inner bank revealed several phases of occupation of a presumed Neolithic causewayed enclosure. Work continues.
