Abstract:
Examination of the nature of archaeological arguments is followed by discussion of the utility of constructing an artificial intelligence (AI) based computational system embodying some of the capacities of archaeologists as arguers, revealing and improving the quality of argument. The WORSAAE project (WORkbench Supporting Archaeological Argument Exploration) is based on hypertext. Taking up Hodder's claim that archaeological reports rarely reveal the debate behind their interpretations, it is suggested that a combined AI/hypertext program would allow the explicit justification of conclusions, adequately representing the course of the dig and any phases of differences of opinion. The paper is illustrated from case studies of Star Carr and of the European Bronze Age.
