Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Over the last fifty years an increasing separation has been seen between 'mainstream' and 'science-based' archaeology. In contrast, archaeologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the discipline as essentially another of the observational sciences. It is important that modern archaeologists understand the methods and kinds of data on which archaeological scientists base their conclusions so that they are able to assess their reliability; without this, there is a danger that scientific conclusions will be taken as established facts or rejected depending on how they fit with existing beliefs, rather than being judged on the quality of the evidence.
