It is generally considered that Roman London originated as a settlement of merchants and officials planted on the north bank of the River Thames some years after the conquest in AD43. This article describes and discusses emerging evidence for the military importance of London from sites excavated over the last few years, including evidence for the establishment of a fort prior to AD50.
