Abstract:
Research on ancient DNA in pre-domestic horses has revealed that some animals would have had spotted coats. Until recently it has not been possible to distinguish such colour patterns, and because the few surviving wild horses are bay, black or dun, it had been assumed that spotted horses did not exist. Depictions of spotted horses in Palaeolithic cave art had thus been considered imaginary, leading to speculation about early art and imagination. Instead, the new findings are a further indication that Palaeolithic hunters were good observers. LD
