Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The traditional view of the Iceni after the Boudican revolt of AD61 is of a tribe who were impoverished and defeated. In light of this view as well as our current limited understanding of the site, the author developed a long-term research project to look at the tribe's civitas capital at Venta Icenorum (modern-day Caistor St Edmund). Work with the Norfolk Historical and Archaeological Research Group led to the discovery of an apparently unique structure, probably of late Roman date, on a hilltop about 2km south-east of Venta, and this is described in detail in this article. The design of the building is considered adventurous and innovative, contesting the suggestion that the region was backward and conservative in the Roman era. LD | ||||
