Abstract:
Mick Aston describes the archaeology of the most southerly point of the British mainland, which includes prehistoric barrows, cairns and standing stones, several fogou sites, and numerous small circular late prehistoric earthworks representing the farmsteads of the millennium between 500BC and AD500. A fine-grained clay in the area was used for making pottery from the Neolithic to early medieval times, and the remains of early houses can be seen at a Romano-British site at Trebarveth, where the clay was used for making salt-working vessels. Placenames and clusters of early churches suggest the presence of early medieval monasteries in the area, whilst some connections between early medieval settlements and land units and Bronze Age monuments can be seen in the landscape. Coastal fishing villages which represent a distinctive type of settlement in the area are also described. LD
