Abstract:
Reports on recent work that is seeking out holy wells within the area of the old county of Dyfed in south-west Wales. This is being undertaken as part of a Cadw-funded pan-Wales project that aims to gain a better understanding of medieval and post-medieval sites such as chapels, churches, monasteries, mills, pillow mounds and fish traps, augmenting the Historic Environment Record and recommending sites for possible legal protection where appropriate. A brief summary of the state of existing knowledge on wells in Wales is followed by a discussion of what is meant by a 'holy well'. Some of the sites discovered or rediscovered during the course of fieldwork are then described. LD
