Abstract:
Sighthill, a stone circle constructed on a hill at the edge of Glasgow city centre in 1979, commemorates four individuals from the city whose megalithic research eventually led to the subject of archaeoastronomy being treated as a serious discipline. In 2012, Glasgow City Council announced plans to remove the stone circle in advance of regeneration of the wider area. A campaign to save Sighthill led to a surge in public interest; it has been recorded by the Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Scotland and entered into the country's National Monuments Record. Although it has not been possible to retain the circle in situ, it has now been agreed that the monument will be removed and re-established at an alternative location. This article describes the circumstances of the circle's construction and discusses the ways in which people have used it over the last thirty-five years. LD
