Abstract:
Discusses the need for archaeological excavations to be documented as clearly and accurately as possible, and outlines how laser scanning has increasingly been used over the last decade to generate 3D records of landscapes, monuments and excavations. Although 3D scanning has many benefits, there are high costs and practical limitations associated with data collection and processing. Digital photogrammetry, or 3D imaging (3Di), from free-range photography, has the potential to meet the unfulfilled promise of scanning. In this article Dominic Powlesland describes how the technique was used to record a Neolithic pit at West Heslerton and excavations at Boltby Scar and Roulston Scar Iron Age hillforts, all in North Yorkshire. Some of the advantages of the approach are then discussed. LD
