Abstract:
In this interview Jonathan Tubb, who heads the Middle East Department at the British Museum, outlines a programme that is to train heritage professionals from Iraq in techniques of emergency heritage management, in response to the recent destruction of archaeological sites in Iraq and Syria by Islamic State. The training programme will help to prepare for the time when effective governmental control of these areas is regained and it is safe to return to the damaged sites. He goes on to describe how he came to be an archaeologist, and mentions some of the fieldwork that he has undertaken in Syria and Jordan. LD
