Abstract:
A large intaglio carving in a cave in East Wemyss, Fife, depicts an unmasted boat with elongated hull and five oars, steered from the stern by a seated human figure holding a sixth oar. Although having some similarities with examples from Bantry (Ireland) and Cossans (Scotland) this carving is unusually situated and differs in technique from others in the cave. Ambiguous antiquarian records of depictions in Jonathan's, and nearby Doo, cave add to the uncertainty over whether this is indeed an ancient image, one which has been retouched at a later date, or a late Victorian graffito.
