Abstract:
Depiction of cauldrons on Pictish sculpture is examined and archaeological evidence for cauldrons in northern Britain between the Late Bronze Age and the post-Roman period is reviewed. The validity of using documentary sources and the role of perceived notions of Celticity in interpreting the archaeological material are considered. It argues that sculptural and archaeological cauldrons can be meaningfully compared and that the sculptural examples do illuminate the archaeological ones, though Pictish sculptural representations probably cannot be equated with particular archaeological types. The discontinuous nature of cauldron deposition is also considered, with reasons why there have been so few comparisons of archaeological artefacts and Pictish symbols.
