Abstract:
Excavation in advance of roadworks revealed a small EIA settlement, two Saxon inhumations and two parallel ditches probably of Saxon date. Although the postholes of the EIA settlement did not suggest a coherent pattern, domestic and storage areas were identifiable and more than one phase was evident. A large, nearly complete shouldered jar was accompanied by the bones of a butchered sheep or goat. Among the pottery, shouldered jars and derivatives predominated, but occupation into an Iron B phase is suggested. Loomweights and spindle whorls were found. With one of the two Saxon burials were several knives and a bronze-bound wooden bucket with four suspension loops on the rim. The other grave, cut through EIA features, contained a body with severed head. Nineteenth century discoveries of Saxon burials in a Neolithic barrow (now vanished) nearby suggest a cemetery of considerable extent perhaps marked out by the parallel ditches. Mollusca indicate a grassland environment for the EIA occupation and fairly open ground during Saxon times.
