Abstract:
Twenty samples of slags from eight settlements are shown to form a chemically coherent group within which appear small but systematic differences (1) between individual bloomery sites, and (2) between liquid slags tapped from the furnace and the more viscous, pilulous slags left behind. Explanations can only be tentative until more materials, including furnace remains, have been examined. Medieval bloomery slags from the Lake District show significant differences from the RB group.
