Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A study intended to show that large, monumental mounds were not always part of Neolithic chamber burial tradition and indeed may well have had different functions from those structures associated with the burial area proper. By emphasising the basic unity of megalithic and non-megalithic practice it is possible to see the final monument as the product of a scheme involving several structural components and requiring considerable time for its completion. Such a view removes the need for the multi-period explanation currently used to interpret megalithic tombs. The context for the emergence of chamber burial among Neolithic societies is briefly sketched. DVC | |||||
