Abstract:
Evidence from excavations to the east of the southern range of almshouse buildings was interpreted in the light of known documentary evidence. Foundations from a late medieval sandstone building were located. The varying depth indicates a complex structure and three architectural mouldings had been re-used in a wall foundation. A number of interments were present at the site but these were not investigated in detail at the request of church authorities. Phases from the sixteenth century onwards represent the decline of earlier buildings and the graveyard area, culminating in the construction of the present almshouses and chapel in the late nineteenth century. Although documentary evidence also indicates a period of rebuilding in the seventeenth century, the area under investigation did not extend into that part of the site. Since this was a salvage excavation, it was not possible to recover deeper or more delicate deposits and the call is made for a fuller investigation. Finds included `Medieval floor tile', described by H A White (187--8), and `The stone mouldings' by R K Morris (188).
