Abstract:
Revelation of domestic archaeological features of medieval, early post-medieval and Victorian date (typical of an urban medieval backland). Dated features include thirteenth- to fifteenth-century pits and postholes and post-medieval walls and foundations. A small pottery assemblage includes residual Roman and eleventh- to mid twelfth-century AD sherds. The bulk of the animal bone recovered is of cattle sheep and pig, but also includes horse, fallow deer, dog, fowl, goose, duck, corvid and cod. No other groups of animal bone from Henley have been published before this. The metalwork from the site includes a plaited copper-alloy chain which may be part of a fourteenth-century chatelaine.
