Abstract:
Speculates that the wooden loft supported by a stone canopy above a tomb in Christ Church cathedral could have been a singing loft, a watching loft, a chantry, or a shrine of St Frideswide with effigies of her parents, King Didanus and Queen Safrida. An argument is put forward against the shrine theory firstly because the priory of St Frideswide was extremely poor and secondly because of the 15th century burial found in a vault beneath the monument in 1889. It is suggested that the figures on the tomb represent Sir Robert Danvers and his second wife Katherine, that it was her body in the vault and that he was probably buried in London, alongside his first wife Agnes.
