A fieldwalking exercise was undertaken in a recently ploughed field to the east of Cumnor, where an area of Iron Age occupation had been discovered in 1981. The present work located a scatter of prehistoric worked flint and Iron Age, Roman and medieval pottery. Analysis of the pottery indicates that the site may have been occupied from the 7th to the 2nd century BC and then again in the Roman period. It is probable that most of the pottery was made in or near the settlement. Evidence of iron-working, cloth production and cereal cultivation was also obtained. A magnetometer survey of part of the area, undertaken in 2012, indicates roundhouses surrounded by pits. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
