Abstract:
SP 885818. The kiln was located by gradiometer survey in advance of limestone quarrying not far from a known villa site. The stone-built chamber, 3m across and 2m deep, had been fired three times, altered and fired twice more, suggesting a commercial scale of operation. The kiln was of periodic or flare type, producing lime for plaster or stucco. Operating temperatures were checked in the laboratory and reference to excavated and tested examples at Iversheim explains the mode of operation. Scanty pottery suggests a date c 140-60. A note on kiln terminology is added.
