Abstract:
Roman coinage in Britain must be seen in the context of the Continental mainland whence it nearly all came. Statistical comparison, period by period, of coins from Roman Britain with those from France and N Italy show that coin-use in Britain was aberrant throughout, eg. in an apparent addiction to small change. The British pattern of coin-use must be seen in the context of its intimate connection with the Roman army (which might, for instance, have done the 4th-century copying). The patterns of ancient coin loss are not in general distorted by modern factors: the main bias arises from over-representation of low denominations, with a further bias due to circulation life. However, the total coins available for study represent less than 0.1% of the original volume.
