SE 963318. On the western edge of this village in the heavily depopulated Wolds, House 2 was built in late 13th cent and twice rebuilt before becoming ruined in late 14th. Partly contemporary with it was another house within the same croft. There were no hearths, and only slight evidence of internal structures (?weaving frame). House 1, with several phases from late 15th/early 16th cent to early 18th cent, together with House 3, a cellared dwelling of similar initial date, seem to indicate transference of population away from the village centre. Other features sectioned were a double dyke (prehistoric or Dark Age), the village street, village boundary bank and late 18th cent coach road. A brief historical and documentary survey is given. 360 items of pottery (late 13th-late 18th cents) are fully catalogued because few comparable groups have been published. Most of the metal finds relate to 19th cent agriculture. LASB | ||||||||||||||
