Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A catalogue of axe-hammers, battle-axes and mace-heads of the area, classified according to the writer's 1966 scheme. A wide range of battle-axes of all stages of development is seen, with a distribution concentrated in the Dumfries, Whithorn and Stranraer areas. Those with shaped angular butts of Form D make up a high proportion of the area's total in Stages II-V, c 50%, or twice the figure for Britain as a whole. Contacts with Ireland are seen, as in the contemporary metalwork. The mace-heads, which elsewhere show Rinyo-Clacton associations, are here unassociated but for one found with a collared urn of the secondary series. They occur only in the S part of the area under review. Axe-hammers form the majority of the corpus entries (160 of the 206), but no petrological identifications have been made. A few are groove-ornamented, or dished on top and bottom surfaces. In the absence of associations, the axe-hammers must be assumed to have a Beaker/Food-vessel horizon as for early battle-axes, but may be longer-lived. | |
