Abstract:
The Luce Sands ring brooch is rejected as an Irish import, mainly because it is difficult to recognise pre-7th-century Irish material in Britain. A survey of Scottish stick-pins with Irish counterparts follows. The 5th/6th-century pins derive from Roman antecedents but may have gone out of fashion in 7th. In the Western Isles in particular new types introduced from Ireland by the Vikings set off a local train of developments. A note on moulds for pins from the Mote of Mark is appended.
