Reports on an archaeological evaluation and excavation undertaken in 1992 prior to development of the site. A sequence of alluvial clay silts and river channels was identified for the period between about 12,000 BP to 3500 BP, when a rise in water levels deposited inorganic muds across the site. Two phases of a wooden trackway crossing a filled-in channel were recorded, and these are thought to have been part of a trackway across the marsh linking Bermondsey Island with higher ground to the south. The earlier trackway consisted of two parallel lines of alder logs held in place by alder stakes; the later structure comprised a single line of oak logs with alder stakes along one side. The second trackway is radiocarbon dated to the mid second millennium BC. The site was covered by a layer of peat dated to the Late Bronze Age. | |||||||||||
